Sweet generosity

Last Friday we looked at the topic of food banks. I quoted the worrying statistics, showing hunger to be a major problem here in the West, and not just in developing countries. A big problem right on our own doorsteps. But I also noted that there’s really enough food to go around – it just needs adequate distribution channels. The following day WHNT News reported that food banks across Madison County were the recipients of 40,000 pounds of sweet potatoes, a portion of a North Carolina farm’s surplus crop of 6.3 million pounds that would otherwise have gone to landfill. As part of a larger-scale operation by the Society of St Andrew, volunteers at Asbury United Methodist Church spent the day packing a mountain of sweet potatoes into sacks, for distribution to 15 different food banks. This apparently represented about 120,000 servings. In the following video the event coordinator emphasises that although there are lots of hungry people in the USA they can all be fed if only we can find ways of getting the food to them.
