NeighborWorks Week

June 2-9, 2012 is National NeighborWorks Week in the USA: it’s only June the 7th today, so you still have time to get involved. During this annual “week of neighbourhood change and awareness” tens of thousands of volunteers are mobilised… friends, neighbours, businesses and civic leaders all join in a drive to repair and decorate homes, landscape gardens, conduct neighbourhood tours and host educational events. Be a part of this and help make your community a better place to live, work and play. NeighborWorks®, based in Washington, D.C., creates “opportunities for lower-income people to live in affordable homes in safe, sustainable neighborhoods that are healthy places for families”, by providing affordable housing and encouraging community development, through a national network of 235 independent, community-centred non-profit organisations serving more than 4,500 communities. One example of the sort of project supported by the initiative is the Freeport, Illinois community garden, which produces more than 1,000 pounds of produce each year, to help feed hungry local people. Gardens such as this are becoming an important source of food for the many poverty-stricken and hungry people that are increasingly found around the USA.
