Best Young Volunteer
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Stevens from Salisbury, England, has been recognised for his volunteer work at Salisbury General Hospital. Daniel, who has been spending Friday afternoons at the hospital, over the last year, helping physiotherapy staff with weekly hydrotherapy sessions for children, and motivating the patients to complete their exercises, has also been studying for his A-levels at Bishop Wordsworth’s School. He is planning a career in physiotherapy. Last week he was awarded Best Young Volunteer 2012.
This is not the first time that a pupil from Bishop Wordsworth’s School has received this award – in 2010 it went to sixth-form student Denis Twomey for his volunteer work in the Burns Unit, and three years before, in 2007, it was awarded to Oliver Perks for volunteering in the Spinal Unit, prior to going on to City University, to study diagnostic radiography.
Last year’s award winner was 17-year-old Emma Preedy from South Wilts Grammar School, who had been spending 2 hours a week helping with general tasks on the Laverstock Ward. A sixth-form pupil from the Grammar School also received the 2009 award – Rhona Kuszynski, who planned to study medicine, had similarly been assisting on the Laverstock Ward. And in 2008 16-year-old Phoebe Martin from the Grammar School was presented with the award for her work with the Community Rehabilation Therapy Team, which subsequently prompted her to pursue a physiotherapy career.
It’s good to see so many young people getting involved in volunteer work of this sort, and making a real difference to other people’s lives, as well as becoming inspired to pursue altruistic careers. Congratulations to all of them, as well as to their schools and the Foundation Trust for encouraging this activity.
