Altruistic behaviour is perhaps nowhere more critical than in our relationship to Planet Earth and our fellow occupants. It has become something of a cliché that our survival as a species depends more than ever on taking environmental concerns seriously. So today’s celebration of Earth Day 2012 should be of interest to all of us.

This year is the 43^rd Earth Day since it commenced in 1970. It is coordinated by the Earth Day Network, which estimates than more than 1 billion people will be participating, from signing up to the Billion Acts of Green campaign, to attending events such as that taking place at Washington’s National Mall, where there will be speakers, musicians and loads of opportunities to learn more about the environment or join relevant non-profits.

Of course, one way we can play our part – not just today – but on an on-going basis – is by reducing our carbon footprint. An organisation that is especially concerned about this is Polar Bears International (PBI), which lists a variety of ways that we can lessen our impact on our environment. These include reducing our dependence on the car, drying clothes outdoors, turning off unnecessary appliances and lights, and even planting trees.

So, why polar bears? Well, in the words of PBI, “We know that if we can assure the survival of the polar bear – the creature in most immediate peril from climate change and pollutants – we’ll have created a better planet for all its flora, fauna, water and air.”

The occasion seems to be bringing out the more generous side of many people: an article in the Huffington Post just a few days ago lists a number of freebie offers that have appeared in connection with Earth Day.

Whether or not you plan to play an active part in Earth Day, don’t forget to spare a thought today for the planet, and what sort of impact you are having on it. Future generations are depending on you!
